Simple Pleasures
We started our day with a celebration. My kids taught me a long time ago that one never needs a reason to celebrate. All you need is some whipped cream and chocolate drizzle on top of about an inch deep cup of coffee. It was Zoe’s idea (she’s a walking celebration, after all), but all three of the kids were delighted when I consented to a tiny bit of hoopla to start the day. I couldn’t help but reflect on the wisdom bound up in the hearts of my children. They still know how to be joyful in the small details; a little whipped cream on their coffee, a new haircut, curls in their hair, a chance to jump on the trampoline in their pajamas.
The kids enjoying their morning celebration (note the girls’ curls:)
So we started the day with one celebration and ended with another: haircuts for the girls and for me. Riley was so excited about it all day that the minute our playgroup guests arrived she told them they’d have to be going soon (she knew haircuts came after playgroup). Fortunately all of our friends love Riley for all her innocent frankness. 🙂 While Zoe was getting her hair cut, some of her hair fell in her face and covered up one of her eyes. She sat there like that for a few minutes and then remarked to the stylist, “I can’t see you. I’ve lost my eye.” I smiled watching her wiggling, despite her best efforts to stay still (and her declaration during Riley’s haircut: “I’m gonna be SO still for her.”). It was such a pleasure experiencing a haircut with the kids. Adam was truly patient waiting on us, and the girls just reminded me that even routine things can be cause for great celebration and a tiny measure of hoopla.
