Oh, What a Feeling!
Sunday afternoon, I was in the kitchen washing dishes (getting everything all set that I might sit down and put some focused effort in on my Christmas cards), when the telephone rang. It was Mom, sounding cheery. “We’re getting more and more excited as time gets closer,” she said.
“Me, too. Riley was just asking if you and PaPa would be able to come pick her up from school tomorrow. I told her maybe you’d be here in time.”
“Well, what would you think if I told you we were almost there?”
I was thrilled! I did a little dance in my kitchen, holding the phone between my ear and my shoulder and lifting my soapy hands in the air above the sink. I guess the girls were so busy with each other (don’t remember if they were best friends or annoying siblings at that particular moment) that they weren’t paying attention to our conversation, and Adam was preoccupied with a Christmas movie (he loves those as much as I do).
So, when the doorbell rang fifteen minutes or so later, the girls had no idea what was going on (and Adam just stayed engrossed in his movie).
“Who is it, girls?” I asked. This was not an unusual question. I rely on them often to announce our visitors when the doorbell rings.
Mom and Dad were hiding so that the girls couldn’t see them through the window. Zoe pulled back the curtain and just fell silent because she couldn’t see anything. Riley immediately recognized the car parked at the curb and said, “It’s Grandma and Papa,” but she said it in an at least that’s their car but I don’t see them and they are coming on Monday and it’s Sunday kind of way.
I unlocked the door and opened it to reveal Grandma and Papa standing crouched at the door. Riley must’ve jumped at least 3 feet in the air and then continued to do so for the next five minutes, shrieking with utter delight. Zoe reacted in almost exactly the same way, except with a lot of giggling. Riley dissolved into giggling after her legs gave out and she had to quit jumping. Remember those Toyota commercials? Well, imagine Oh, what a feeling! and double it, then double it again. A week and two days till Christmas, and we’d all already gotten a huge gift. We LOVE Christmas time with Grandma and PaPa, and we look forward to it all year.
