It Came Upon a Midnight Clear
I learned a few things worth noting at our church Christmas pageant on Sunday night:
1. When the Bible says that Mary “wrapped Him in swaddling clothes and laid him in the manger,” it actually means that baby Jesus was loosely wrapped in a blanket. Whenever she picked him up (which was usually by the head), all of his clothes fell off.
2. When Mary rocked baby Jesus in her arms, it almost looked like she was dancing.
3. Mary and Joseph had a great relationship. The Bible doesn’t mention it, but they actually held hands quite a bit.
4. Mary is very friendly and outgoing, and she waved at everyone she knew from her station behind the manger.
5. Even though scripture places the visit of the wise men around the time that Jesus would’ve been a toddler, they actually visited the stable. One of them even tripped on the way over to the manger. So, the night wasn’t actually all that silent.
6. The wise men were very short (and there were 2, not 3 as we usually see depicted, or any other number) as were Joseph, Mary, and the one shepherd that actually visited them that Holy night.
7. Toys talk when no one’s looking. Okay, so I should’ve learned this when I watched Toy Story, but I’m just now getting the lesson.
8. Cinderella dolls are very uncomfortable when the other toys stand too close. Our Cinderella spent a while with her arms up in a please get away from me kind of way.
9. Storm troopers have always gotten a bad rap. They are actually very sweet, at least the toy ones. I actually witnessed a storm trooper singing O Come, All Ye Faithful and Our God is an Awesome God, right along with everyone else.
10.Storm troopers love stage lighting and are fascinated with looking into the lights at various angles.
Four of our teachers joined us for the play, which though very short, was enthusiastically portrayed. All three of Riley’s AU teachers were there, and she was so excited that the first thing she said when we arrived was, “I need to find Ms. Heidi, Ms. Michelle, and Ms. Trisha!” As usual with Riley, all of her excitement just flowed from every limb of her body. I love that about her! She moved constantly all evening. When we got home, it even took her a while to settle down so that she could get to sleep.
One of Adam’s favorite people, Ms. Jennifer (his Pre-K teacher from last year), also attended the performance. Adam’s face just lights up when he sees her. I get the feeling that he thinks that the two people who understand him best of all in this world are Ms. Jennifer and his grandma. I kept telling everyone as I introduced them to Ms. Jennifer that she is Adam’s You Light Up My Life (I even sang it as I said it:)) person, because that’s what Kevin called her after an occasion last year when Ms. Jennifer and I went out to dinner. She arrived at our house and Adam was jumping on the trampoline out back. He took one look at her and came running across the yard to her. It was a “running through the meadows” kind of moment, and Adam only runs across the yard like that for two people: Ms. Jennifer and Grandma. Even I don’t rate that kind of enthusiasm.
Zoe was a little dismayed that I forgot to tell her teachers about the play, but when I told her that all four of Riley and Adam’s teachers were also there to see her, she perked up. She was very excited to see us out there watching her performance. All the kids did a wonderful job, and the evening was a lot of fun.
