Christmas Blobs
Decorating sugar cookies is an annual must-do for us at Christmas time. Everyone gets in on the fun, and all three of the kids enjoy it very much. There are so many things about making sugar cookies that I love. I love that sugar cookies always taste delicious. I love that they make the house smell wonderful. I love that making them is an entire-family event. I love that creativity is such an integral part of the process. I love that all three of my children look forward to the decorating. I love that you can cut them into so many neat shapes and then make them look so beautiful.
That brings me to what I hate about sugar cookies. For me, this is definitely a love-hate relationship. I hate that no matter what I do, my sugar cookies are difficult to roll out and difficult to keep in the shape I cut them. If any of you know what I am doing wrong, please speak! I cut these cookies into lovely trees, snowflakes, stars, holly leaves, stockings, and Santas, but if they made it to the oven in their original shape, most of them broke as I was transferring them to the cooling racks. So, I was in the kitchen mumbling discontent under my breath while the kids, Dad, and Kevin were having a blast at the table decorating. I told Mom (who was also on the baking team in the kitchen), “I hate this! They look more like blobs than trees and snowflakes!” To which my fantastic mom replied, “Well, if they’re blobs they’ll be delicious blobs. Delicious Christmas blobs.”
A new tradition has been born at the Three Ring Circus. From now on, we decorate delicious Christmas blobs. You know, I had to chuckle at the end of the experience. The kids could care less if the Christmas tree I cut out came out in three pieces. They didn’t even seem to notice. They just loved selecting colored frosting, sprinkling on glittery sugars, and then taste-testing. The best part for them was enjoying the whole process as a family. I loved watching each one of them get absorbed in their creativity. This year, no one needed to show them what to do. All 3 of our little artists were hard at work from the moment the first bare cookie was placed in front of them until the very last cookie was decorated. The cookies–oops, I mean Christmas blobs– were beautiful and delicious.
