All Dressed Up
We had a wonderful time last night at the Fall Festival! The kids were so excited. Riley had to get the schedule all straight so that she’d know exactly when she could put on her Cinderella costume. When I told her that it would be after I got back from helping with set-up at the church building, she said, “Bye, Mom. You need to go to church.” I’m not sure the kids could pick a favorite part of the festival. For Adam it was probably jumping in the inflated castle, for Riley it must’ve been the hot apple cider (she drank 3 cups!), and for Zoe it was probably seeing all of her friends and getting to say, “I’m Ariel. You’re beautiful! Who are you?”
Kevin and I dressed up too for fun and especially for the kids, who thought it was wonderful! I had a blast…no one seemed to recognize me in my butterfly mask. I had several good friends thinking,”Who is that woman? She seems to know me,” until they heard me laugh and that gave it all away. Zoe was absolutely delighted and referred to me as “Butterfly” the entire evening. “Butterfly, where should we go next? Butterfly, let’s go on the hayride. Come on, Butterfly!” One of my good friends caught on and also called me Butterfly for the rest of the evening as well. Kevin was the Lone Ranger, but he took off his mask about 2 minutes after we got to the Festival, so I started calling him Tex instead. Everyone loved his mustache and someone even dared him to wear it to worship this morning (and he almost did). I got to laugh out loud when Riley tried it on herself this morning and then said, “No…that’s Daddy’s.”
While we were waiting for the hayride, Adam noticed a baby dressed as a giraffe and thought that was AWESOME. He kept trying to talk to the baby and was making eye contact with her and saying, “Hi, giraffe! (insert filler “nanana” here, which is autistic for “I’m not sure exactly what to say”), giraffe?” The baby was probably too little to even know she was a giraffe, but when she didn’t answer, Adam got my attention, glanced over to her, and started commenting to me about it. If only they made animal costumes for 5 year old boys. We’d be set.
It was a wonderful evening which ended in group weeping in the bathroom as we got our over-tired kids into their pajamas and shuffled them off to bed.
